Many others apart from Corto Maltese are looking for this train: regular and irregular armies, revolutionaries and counterrevolutionaries that are mixed with a number of historical figures, especially Baron Roman Ungern-Sternberg, a Russian general who commands the Asian Cavalry Division and who proposes that Corto should fight alongside him to conquer the whole of Mongolia, a proposal that Corto rejects immediately. The scenarios of the adventure thus shift from China to the regions of Manchuria, Mongolia and Siberia in a period of time between 19. In the aftermath of the Russian Revolution and the First World War, Corto Maltese is engaged by the Red Lanterns, a Chinese secret society made up entirely of women, to find an armored train laden with gold that belonged to the last Russian Tsar Nicholas II. The fable culminates in describing the parrots' imminent extinction, and what they would like to communicate to humanity first. It describes Alex, a grey parrot famous among humans for its ability to communicate, as an exception. The parrot likens this message to the contact call of some social animals, attempting to similarly get the attention of an extraterrestrial intelligence, while noting parrots' intelligence has largely been overlooked. It describes the country's Arecibo radio telescope and how, in 1974, the telescope was used to broadcast a radio message from humanity into deep space to demonstrate humanity's intelligence. The structure of this short story is a fable told from the point of view of a Puerto Rican parrot, a critically endangered species endemic to Puerto Rico. Not that I can't always care about stereotypical manga, but when it seems to underline the tragedy genre and there's nothing really different compared to other shoujo, that's kind of unexpected. The main issue I have about this manga, though, is that the relationship of the two leads is just as stereotypical as the other school romantic comedies. It's still interesting to see his-currently-still-mysterious attitude. I find the other tragedy, on the dying character to be just okay, though. Perhaps I've read too much manga with the main characters having difficulties in socializing (to being bullied) or that this manga relied much on this issue that it became obvious and thus rather predictable. I'll call it a stereotypical shoujo take on tragedy. In spite of its poor initial reception among Victorian readers, Lewis’s affection for it established Phantastes as one of MacDonald’s most enduring and studied works in literary and academic circles. Lewis discovered Phantastes in 1916, within a few hours he said he knew he “had crossed a great frontier.” MacDonald’s unusual fantasy set Lewis on the road toward his eventual conversion to Christianity, and forever after he referred to MacDonald as his “master.” Sales of Phantastes, however, proved a disappointment, and thus MacDonald ultimately turned to the writing of realistic fiction in the 1860s. Two volumes of poetry prior to this had set MacDonald apart as a talented young author to watch in England's literary circles. From that beginning, he embarks on a dream-like series of encounters that follow the form of an epic quest, though the purpose and destination of his journey remain obscure and are never fully clarified. The book’s narrator, Anodos, enters Fairy Land through a mysterious old wooden secretary. This unusual fantasy, subtitled A Fairie Romance, is one of MacDonald’s most mysterious and esoteric titles. George MacDonald’s first major fiction work, in his words “a sort of fairy tale for grown people,” Phantastes was published in 1858 by Smith, Elder & Co., London. They struggled with the problems of Kosovo, of the Kurds, and of a homeland for the Jews. They pushed Russia to the sidelines, alienated China, and dismissed the Arabs. Stern, intransigent, impatient when it came to security concerns and wildly idealistic in his dream of a League of Nations that would resolve all future conflict peacefully, Wilson is only one of the larger-than-life characters who fill the pages of this extraordinary book. Center stage, for the first time in history, was an American president, Woodrow Wilson, who with his Fourteen Points seemed to promise to so many people the fulfillment of their dreams. Between January and July 1919, after “the war to end all wars,” men and women from around the world converged on Paris to shape the peace.
